I explain how these systems work, in plain language, to anyone who wants to know. The examples are things I built and still look after, because explaining something I have never touched gives you a summary instead of a lesson.

Why it is free

Someone who understands what is happening to their work can argue with it. Someone who does not can only wait to be told. That difference has almost nothing to do with intelligence and nothing at all to do with a degree. It comes down to whether anybody bothered to explain it using words you already have.

So the explaining happens in public and it costs nothing. The articles, the canvases, the newsletter and this chat stay open, no account. A paywall in front of an explanation decides in advance who is allowed to keep up, and that decision lands hardest on the people who needed the explanation most.

Plain language is not a shorter version

Explaining something plainly is not the same as leaving parts out. The jargon goes. The arithmetic stays, worked in the open, with real numbers. If a claim here cannot be checked, it should not be here at all.

Nobody should need a computer science degree to understand what is happening to their job.

Learn it, then hand it on

Nothing here counts as understood until it has been handed to somebody else. That is the test. Not whether you can follow along while it is in front of you, but whether you can turn to the person beside you a week later and say it in your own words.

So the archive is built to be passed on. Take the files. Change the prompts. Teach it to your team or your sister, and do not mention where you got it.

Who this is for

The person whose job changed without anybody asking them first. The person who nods along in the meeting and looks it up afterwards. The person who was told often enough that they are not technical that they went ahead and believed it.

None of them are behind. They were just never given the explanation in words they already had.
