What is a context window?

The context window is everything the model can see at this moment: your message, the conversation so far, and any files it has been given. It is not memory. It is a view.

Technical: The context window is the maximum amount of text a model can process in a single pass.

Measured in pieces, not messages

Window size is counted in tokens, the word-pieces covered in the tokens canvas. This is why a single long document can fill more of the window than fifty short messages.

Technical: Window sizes are quoted in tokens, so text length matters far more than message count.

It re-reads everything, every turn

A model does not hold your conversation between turns. Every message re-sends the entire history, and the model reads all of it again before answering.

Technical: Each request is stateless; the full conversation is re-submitted every turn.

Past the edge, the oldest goes

Once the conversation is longer than the window, something has to go, and it is the oldest material. There is no alert and no gap in the reply.

Technical: Older turns are dropped or summarised once the conversation exceeds the window.

This is why long chats forget

The forgetting people notice in long conversations is not the model losing interest or making a mistake. The earlier agreement has fallen outside the window, so it genuinely cannot see it.

Technical: Apparent forgetting is usually eviction from the window, not a reasoning failure.

A bigger window is not free

Larger windows sound like a pure upgrade. They are not. Everything in the window is re-read on every turn, so a fuller window costs more and answers more slowly.

Technical: Cost and latency scale with the number of tokens processed per request.

Metaphor: A much taller frame, densely packed with tiles, with the sweeping beam moving visibly slower and heavier

Starting fresh actually works

Starting a new conversation genuinely fixes a stuck one. You are emptying the window and putting back only what is relevant, instead of asking the model to find it inside an hour of noise.

Technical: A new session resets the window; carry forward only what still matters.

Metaphor: A clean empty frame beside the crowded one, with a few chosen tiles being placed into it deliberately

Do not bury the important part

Attention across a long window is uneven. Material at the very start and the very end is used most reliably, and the middle is where a buried instruction quietly gets missed. Put the thing that matters at the end.

Technical: Retrieval accuracy dips for material placed in the middle of a long context.

Metaphor: The frame lit brightly at its top and bottom bands while the middle band sits noticeably dimmer
