Is Editing Cheating?
Editing is grammar, punctuation and the shape of a sentence. Your writing cleaned up is still your writing.
Next walkthroughTwo Thirds Used AI AnywayThe short answer
No, and the reason is worth having clearly, because it tells you where the line actually is.
Editing is grammar, punctuation and the shape of a sentence. The thought was yours before the machine saw it and it is the same thought afterwards. Your writing cleaned up is still your writing.
Nobody worries about the spellchecker
Word processors have fixed spelling since the 1980s. The red underline that appears as you type arrived in the mid 1990s. Before either existed, anything published seriously was read by a copy editor whose whole job was changing the words.
None of that has ever been called cheating. The author's name goes on the cover and the editor's name goes in the acknowledgements, and everybody understands why without needing it explained.
The line is not the tool
It does not matter whether the help came from a person, a program or a plugin. One question decides it: whose thinking is in the finished thing.
That rule survives the arrival of the next tool, which is why it is worth using. Every boundary drawn around a specific technology has collapsed within a few years of being drawn. A rule about authorship does not have that problem.
What is on the other side
Write me an argument for this position. What should my conclusion be. Come up with three reasons. Make this sound like I understood the material.
The giveaway is not the wording of the prompt. It is what you have afterwards. If you could not defend a claim without the chat window open, that claim is not yours, and the fact that the sentence is clean is what makes it hard to notice.

What counts as editing?
Grammar, punctuation, cutting a rambling sentence to its point, reordering paragraphs, taking the heat out of an angry email. The thought was already yours.
Why is the spellchecker never called cheating?
Because it changes the words without changing whose thinking they carry. Copy editors have done the same for centuries.
What is the one question that decides it?
Whose thinking is in the finished thing.
Why is that better than a rule about which tool you used?
Because rules about a specific technology collapse when the technology moves. A rule about authorship does not.
How do you tell if you crossed the line?
Ask whether you could defend every claim without the chat open. If not, it was written for you.

What she says
Somebody asked me if it is cheating to use AI to edit their writing. It is not. Editing is grammar, punctuation, and the shape of a sentence. People have paid editors to do that for centuries.
The line is not the tool. The line is whose thinking it is. Your idea, tidied up, is still your idea. An idea you never had is not yours, however clean the sentence is. Subscribe. No permission required.
