What a pattern actually is

A pattern is just something that happens the same way often enough that you can guess what comes next.

You do this all day

A pattern is something that happens the same way often enough that you can guess what comes next.

A song reaches the end of the verse and you already know the chorus is coming. A price reads nine ninety nine and you read it as ten. Somebody opens a message with hey, quick question, and you know they want something.

Nobody taught you any of that. You saw it enough times.

The same thing, at a scale you cannot picture

That is what was done to the machine, with more writing than a person could read in a thousand lifetimes.

It did not learn what the words mean. It learned which ones keep turning up together. Those are different achievements, and the gap between them explains most of what you notice when you use it.

Why that gap matters to you

It can finish your sentence beautifully and have no idea what it just said. Both of those are true at the same time, and neither cancels the other.

So the writing comes out fluent and the facts inside it need checking. Fluency is the part it learned. Accuracy is the part you supply.

Where you already trust patterns

Your spam filter is a pattern machine and you let it decide what you never see. Your bank watches the pattern of your spending and stops a card on the strength of it. Your phone picks which photographs to show you.

None of those understand anything either. You already live comfortably with that, which is the useful thing to notice before anyone tells you this technology is either magic or a fraud.

Check yourself

Define a pattern in one sentence.

Something that happens the same way often enough that you can guess what comes next.

What did the machine actually learn?

Which words keep turning up together. Not what they mean.

How can it write beautifully and still be wrong?

Fluency is the pattern it learned. Nothing in that pattern checks whether the content is true.

Name a pattern machine you already trust without thinking.

Your spam filter, your bank's fraud check, or the order of your feed.
