What is MCP?
MCP is one agreed connector shape that lets any tool plug into any AI assistant. Nine steps on why it exists and what it changed.
An AI in a box is not much help
On its own, an assistant knows nothing about your calendar, your documents, or last week’s notes. It can only talk. Useful work starts the moment it can reach the things you actually keep your life in.
Every tool needed its own wiring
Each app spoke its own language, so every assistant needed a purpose-built connection to every single tool. Five assistants and ten tools meant fifty separate connections, each one built and maintained by hand.
MCP is one agreed shape of plug
Instead of a custom cable for every pair, everyone agreed on one connector. Any tool that offers that shape can be picked up by any assistant that accepts it. Nobody has to know about each other in advance.
One side offers, the other side asks
The tool side puts out a socket and says here is what I can do. The assistant side plugs in and asks for those things by name. Neither one needs to be rebuilt when the other changes.
Build it once, it works everywhere
A tool builder wires up the connector a single time and every compatible assistant can use it. That is why the number of things your AI can reach grew so quickly. The work stopped being repeated.
What it looks like on a normal day
Ask about a file and it reads the file. Ask what is on Thursday and it checks the calendar. You never see the connection happen. You just stop copying and pasting things into a chat window.
A plug is still a door
Every connector you add is another thing your assistant can reach, which is the point and also the caution. Connect what you actually need, know what each one is allowed to touch, and keep the ones that can change or delete things on a shorter leash.
